Why Some Relationships, Rings, Proposals, Wedding & Marriages Are a Waste

Posted by mikenopolis on April 27, 2009

This PostSecret picture really made me think…

Marriage

I’ve said many times that I would love to finally get married after being with my girlfriend for 12 years & 10 months. I don’t want us to be in our thirties saying the words “My girlfriend and I are…”. Over the past 4-5 years many of our friends and family have gotten married some had a child or two. I’m truly happy for MOST of them not because they ARE happy, but because some of them BELIEVE that they are happy. The main reason we’ve not tie the knot after all these years is because we wanted to financially build a foundation for our livelihoods before doing so. Money has been a big problem with me after my father passed away and left me to support my handicapped mother.

The reason I look down on some marriages is because some couples gets married and live in their friends/parents/grandparents homes. That’s even worst than renting an apartment in my view. I’m sure some of you will say that I’m “snooty” for thinking this way, but I blame this discrimination on the society we live in. I’ve seen people driving a beat up old Toyota Corolla with three baby seats (and plastic spinners on their wheels). I’ve had an employee ask me to get her a raise because her husband can’t (won’t) get a job. I’ve had friends that dropped out of college to get married and “start a family”. I have an uncle who lives in the basement of my grandmother’s house in Denver with his wife. He works part time as a phone operator for some infomercial company, his wife is a stay at home wife…They are planning to have a few kids…a few years back he ask if he would move into my house in LA. I said no because I know he probably won’t pay rent, sure I have two spare bedrooms, but I don’t help deadbeats, not even if we’re blood.

I know all these examples are just that… bad examples, but I feel like I’m seeing more and more or these type of relationships. Obviously there are MANY happy couples out there who live the “perfect” life where there is sufficient income, family value and love. Their children would be well supported financially and emotionally. But as I look at the younger generation around me (while I’m in my late 20’s) I’m starting to lose hope. They listen to junk they think is music, they watch reality TV shows that lack direction, whatever happened to shows that has a story, a show that taught young children lessons in life? These “kids” think visible body piercings and tattoos won’t ruin their job search and the only thing they know about a computer is how to go on social networks. I read over 400 resumes in the past two weeks trying to look for 2 new employees, interviewed about 20 of these people and maybe 3 of them will have a promising future in being human. The other 17 looked good one paper but definitely bent the truth just a little too much on the resume. The rest of the resumes are just a disgrace to the word.

I can rant on and on about this, but it’s starting to get too long.

Stupid College Degrees? or just Lost Graduates – Craigslist

Posted by mikenopolis on June 30, 2008

I was looking to see how the job market was doing by seeing what there were on Craigslist in terms of resumes, and job postings, I came upon this one that’s rather amusing:

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/res/736164345.html(Deleted)

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/res/738276089.html(EXPIRED)

I went to college with an idea of what I want to do, what I want to be, a sense of purpose if you will. While I was there I always wondered what everyone else really are doing going to classes like “Asian Studies” what are you going to do with that?!?! All I see is maybe becoming an Asian Studies Professor. I’m not really saying anything bad about the major (or any other majors) I just wonder how many college students have a clue what they are doing and how much their undergraduate studies will affect them. This person is a prime example.

I have copied his Craigslist listing and added in my personal comments:

Qualified Personal Assistant Available (Irvine)

Reply to: res-738276XXX@craigslist.org
Date: 2008-06-30, 2:26PM PDT (revised)

Hello,

My name is Brandon, and I recently graduated from the University of California at Irvine with a BA in History. Now that I have my degree (A PAPER THAT SAYS YOU GOT A USELESS DEGREE), I am looking for full time work. There are many opportunities out there, but I believe that I am able to fill the role of a personal assistant very well. (YOU WENT TO COLLEGE TO BECOME A PERSONAL ASSISTANT?!?!?)

During my last year of college, I served as a personal assistant to a busy CTO (WHAT IS A CTO?!?! I THINK IT’S A CHIEF TECHNICAL OFFICER, BUT HOW DO YOU EXPECT PEOPLE TO KNOW FOR SURE? AND WHAT KIND OF INDUSTRY IS IT IN?) carrying out all sorts of tasks from the run-of-the-mill to the extraordinary (WHERE ARE THE EXAMPLES? SO ARE WE TALKING ABOUT ORDERING COFFEE? OR PROSTITUTES?). I am confident that I overwhelmingly exceed any qualifications necessary to carry out personal assistant related tasks for anyone (ANYONE? DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW DEMANDING RICH PEOPLE CAN BE? I WORKED FOR ONE, THEY NEED THE STUPIDEST SHIT AND IS UNHAPPY WITH A LOT OF THINGS THAT ARE UNCONTROLLABLE…HOW DO YOU “OVERWHELMINGLY EXCEED” THAT???) . I attribute this confidence (AKA: COCKINESS) to my ability to learn how to do almost anything quickly and efficiently (ANYTHING?!?!?! I DOUBT YOU CAN LEARN MY JOB (I’M JUST A LOWLY PROGRAMMER) “QUICKLY”). In addition to having strong Microsoft office skills (DEFINE STRONG, MS OFFICE IS A SUITE, IT CONSIST OF ACCESS, EXCEL, INFOPATH, OUTLOOK, POWERPOINT, PUBLISHER & WORD, WITHIN EACH THERE ARE NUMBERIOUS FUNCTIONS THAT ARE PROGRAMMED, UPDATED, COMPILED & BUILT BY THOUSANDS OF PROGRAMMER OVER 20+ YEARS), I am good with computers in general (WHAT? MYSPACE? ILLEGAL DOWNLOADS? PORN? OR FACEBOOK?) and I can type 60+WPM (SO YOU ARE BETTER THAN MY FATHER, WANT A METAL?). Additionally, I am a very fast learner and can teach myself to use any major software application (AGAIN, WHERE ARE THE EXAMPLES? HOW MANY PROGRAMS DO YOU KNOW OF, MANY COMPANIES USE PROPRIETARY SOFTWARES THAT ARE MADE TO ORDER, THEY CAN MAKE A PROGRAM, THEN WRITE A 500 PAGE INSTRUCTION MANUAL, HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE YOU TO LEARN THAT MR. FAST LEARNER). Also, I have exceptional internet research skills (AGAIN WITH THE PORN SEARCH), stemming from my time at the University of California of Irvine (YES, YOU ALREADY TOLD ME YOU CAN USE GOOGLE). History is a research intensive discipline, and consequently I have obtained unparalleled research skills (WHAT ORGANIZATION GAVE YOU THE HONOR/RIGHT TO SAY YOUR SKILLS ARE “UNPARALLELED”, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU ARE BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE?) which I am certain would be transferable to this line of work (YOU READ BOOKS & ARTICLES, EVERYONE ELSE DID TOO! WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT? YOUR MAJOR INVOLVES MORE MEMORIZATION THAN CREATIVITY). I am extremely clean and organized in my personal life. I have been characterized as a neat freak (THEY CALL IT A FREAK FOR A REASON) and a perfectionist on numerous occasions (IF YOU SPEND THAT MUCH TIME ORGANIZING YOUR LIFE NEATLY, DO YOU THINK YOU’LL HAVE TIME TO ASSIST WITH SOMEONE ELSE’S LIFE?). Organization and multitasking have always come easy to me and as such, I believe I would be able to alleviate any organizational problems which you may have (GREAT! NOW YOU ARE TELLING YOUR POTENTIAL EMPLOYER/S THEY HAVE PROBLEMS!)

Ideally this position will allow me the opportunity to learn a new industry (YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU CAN AND WANT TO DO HUH? COLLEGE HAS TAUGHT YOU NOTHING), while using all the skills which I have obtained in my past endeavors. I am especially interested in continuing work as a personal assistant because I believe that I could not only help my employer greatly, but also learn a great deal by working so closely with a working professional. (YOU ARE STILL SCREAMING THAT YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU CAN AND WANT TO DO FOR A LIVING, YOU GRADUATED COLLEGE)

Much of my past work experience has been in the food and beverage/hospitality industries (WAITING TABLES AND WORKING AT A FAST FOOD PLACE IS A COMMON JOB FOR STUDENTS. I WAS A COMPUTER SCIENCE MAJOR, I WORKED AS AN I.T. ASSISTANT, WHY DIDN’T YOU DO SOMETHING RELATED TO YOUR MAJOR, IT REALLY WOULD’VE HELPED YOUR CURRENT JOB SEARCH). From this experience, I have gained skills such as time management (DON’T BOAST THAT YOU ARE ON TIME, THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO DO), multitasking, management/leadership, prioritizing etc etc ( I LEARN THIS STUFF IN THE BOY SCOUTS, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE SINCE THEN?). Also, I have gained unmatched customer service skills from the 5+ years I have spent dealing with customers in the hospitality industry (THERE YOU GO WITH THE “UNMATCHED” CRAP, WHO GAVE YOU THAT RIGHT?!?! THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO PROVIDE CUSTOMER SERVICE AS AN ACTUAL PROFESSION, CAN YOU DO IT BETTER THAN THAT WITH YOUR “5+” YEARS EXPERIENCE?) . I am a very friendly and pleasant person to be around and I believe that these traits are important in a personal assistant (IN SOME INDUSTRY, THEY CHEW AND SPIT OUT “PLEASANT” PEOPLE LIKE YOU, JUST BECAUSE YOU ASKED FOR THINGS NICELY DOESN’T MEAN YOU’LL GET RESULTS, WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE BESIDES YOUR SMILEY FACE? I WANT 4 HOOKERS FOR THE PRICE OF 1, WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO? SMILE AT THE PIMP?!??!). I believe that all of the above noted skills are both transferable and relevant to a position as a personal assistant. (NO! WHAT WE’VE GOT HERE IS A PUSH-OVER WHO JUST DESCRIBED HIMSELF AS A PERFECT RECEPTIONIST)

Given the opportunity, I am confident that my experience and personal disposition would be a great asset to anyone seeking a personal assistant. No job is too great or too menial for me (YOU WON’T LAST A DAY AS A PERSONAL ASSISTANT (P.A.) TO SOME OF THE PEOPLE I KNOW, THEY TREAT THEIR P.A. LIKE CRAP, IT’S NOT JUST “CAN YOU PLEASE FILE THIS FOR ME”). I have my own car, and a valid CA drivers license (WOW! HERE’S A GOLD STAR) . I can accomplish any task quickly, efficiently, and accurately with no problems and minimal supervision (WHAT PROOF DO YOU HAVE TO BACK UP THIS CLAIM? WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WHEN YOU EFF UP A BILLION DOLLAR DEAL BECAUSE YOU SMILED LIKE AN IDIOT AT THE INVESTOR’S WIFE AND THEY TAKE IT THE WRONG WAY?) . I am even willing to commute anywhere in Orange County given the right opportunity. A full resume, cover letter, and references will be provided upon request. Feel free to email or call me at anytime. Thanks for reading!! (NO THANK YOUUUUU FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT!)

***NOTE***

After seeing a few replies it seems that I may have been a little blunt, mean and unfair in this post. But I have seen too many young talent go to waste in my life. Some of you may see this as going a little too far, some would laugh their butts off. IN THE END, THIS WAS A MESSAGE for you and a LESSON to be learned from me (what I see as just a normal guy). If you are NOT planning to go to college, work hard, work very hard, because experience and skills is what will bring you to the top. Your parents may think it was a bad decision not to continue education, but remember, when the kids your age gets out from college 4-6 years later, you have a lot more experience. If you ARE going to college, start getting experience in what your major is early, find an internship, get to know people within that industry because when you are done with school you are in competition with a lot of people who can do what you do and so much more.

PIMPS HAVE PERSONAL ASSISTANTS TOO, WE CALL THEM HOOKERS… AT THE VERY LEAST, YOU SHOULD HAVE DIRECTION OF WHAT YOU WANT TO BE OR DO. IF YOU ARE HAVE A DEGREE IN HISTORY, WORK WITH IT, USE IT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE, SEEK HISTORIANS, MUSEUM HEADS WHO NEED ASSISTANTS AND TELL THEM THAT YOU ARE PURSUING AN INTEREST, NOT JUST A JOB! EMPLOYERS LOVE EMPLOYEES WHO LOVE WHAT THEY DO, SHOW THEM YOU HAVE THE SAME INTEREST AND PASSION THEY DO (YOU PROVED THIS BY GETTING A DEGREE FROM A GOOD TIER 1 COLLEGE) AND THEY JUST MIGHT TAKE YOU UNDER THEIR WINGS. I MAY HAVE BEEN BLUNT AND RUDE ABOUT THIS. BUT I SERIOUSLY DON’T THINK YOU SHOULD SELL YOURSELF SHORT, WORK WITH WHAT YOU’VE WORKED HARD TO GET, DON’T SETTLE FOR A P.A. JOB, THAT’S WHAT HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUT WITH NO AMBITION DOES!

Idiot in Accounting Class Named R.Ogata

Posted by mikenopolis on March 4, 2008

As you know, I’ve been taking an accounting class Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00-9:00pm (PST). Attendance is worth a few point in the class so the professor passes around a sign-in sheet. It gets passed down from one person to the next, from one row to the next, then one section to the next…well there’s this IDIOT named R.Ogata! [PICTURE] who constantly screws it up, how hard is it to pass a paper in the right direction? He’s done this 3 times now. He sits in the middle section, when the sign-in sheet gets to him, he decides to pass it to the next section of the class and ignores half his section. Look at this picture, you get what I’m talking about!

Accounting Class

Posted by mikenopolis on February 14, 2008

I’ve been taking an accounting class at a local community college for fun because I hate driving through traffic to get from work in Irvine to home is LA. Last night I took the second test, it had 50 multiple choice questions and 6 written “workout” calculations, journalizing problems. Majority of the class took more than the FULL time (2 hrs.) to finish the test. We started about 6:45pm which is already 15 minutes extra since the class begins at 7:00pm, at 8:50 we were told that he would be nice enough to let us have an extra 15 minutes, so the actual time allowed went from 2 hours to 2 hours & 30 minutes!!!

The reason I’m ranting is that there were A LOT more question and things to work out in this test than the last one…I think this professor should take a class in time management, either make the test easier or shorter, or allow more time to begin with, not make the students freak out watching the time go by!!!!

My 2nd Graduation Ceremony

Posted by mikenopolis on June 12, 2005

Today is my girlfriend’s birthday. So in order to not mess up her plans & celebration, I have not invited her to my graduation ceremony (She doesn’t even know I’m walking). I really wished mine didn’t fall on this day so I wouldn’t so feel guilty.

Although I graduated in the Fall quarter of 2004 (December), received my diploma and have a great full time job, my family still wanted me to walk the June 2005 ceremony, I hate the fact that I’m walking a Class of 2005 ceremony, it’s kinda embarrassing. I wish my dad hadn’t past away last year. He would’ve love to see me finally finish this chapter of my life. As much as I didn’t care for this since I considered myself done 1.5 years ago, it’s still VERY emotional and I actually cried a bit.

Because of my usual work schedule, I was up at 5 in the morning and since I needed to get to the school before the family and friends who are attending. I decided to head out early so I actually saw the empty setup for my graduation. This is actually somewhat “Historical”, this will be the LAST UC Riverside graduation on this lawn (Commons Lawn) as the Commons will be torn down this summer to make room for a 4 floor common. Oh the memories of shooting pool and cramming for finals at 3am every quarter! I will miss this place.

No Graduation For me Just Yet

Posted by mikenopolis on June 1, 2004

This month was supposed to be my happy graduation month, however due to lack to opening in a class I need as a prerequisite for some other required course, I am two classes behind, so everything will be pushed back for one quarter.

I was going to take the remaining two classes this summer in order to petition to walk the graduation ceremony this month, but my father’s early passing now requires that I find a more stable income instead of the 3 part-time jobs I currently hold.

Gotta go study for my finals now. Hopefully I’ll find a more permanent job that will allow me to finish up the classes in the Fall.

Taking one of my classes at IVC (community college in Irvine, CA.)

Posted by mikenopolis on February 4, 2004

My school is dumb. I was unable to add into a required course for the second time now. I don’t know how many people NEED to take this class each quarter, but there was A LOT of us trying to add (happens every quarter!) but there are only 109 seats for the class, there is only ONE class. Hello?!?!?! Hire another professor. People are unable to graduate on schedule because the U.C. school administration are retards!!!

I’ve enrolled in the equivalent course at Irvine Valley College, they are on a semester system, this means that I’m not going to graduate this June because this class will not end before my UC registration time, which means I’m unable to register the classes I need in order to graduate because of the pre-reqs. I guess I can take the next free quarter and fully load it with the classes for my minor.
